A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
